In business and in life we are tasked with making many decisions each day. Some are more important than others, but almost all of our decisions affect our future as well as the lives of others.
Often, we make decisions based on ego or greed. Sometimes we don't think before we act and make decisions with little knowledge or research. Other times we make selfish decisions and on the lighter side we sometimes choose to be selfless in our choices.
Below, I have compiled a list of questions I defer to before making business and life decisions that I deem important. Consider using some of the questions below to guide you or add others that will spark your thought process. The key here is to have some general guidelines to think about that enhance the decision making process. If you make better decisions, it's obvious you'll have better results.
If you write a list of positive answers after each decision you're doing the right thing. If the answer is "no" or "nothing" after each of these questions, you now have some research to do and it's a good idea to re-evaluate. The goal of this exercise is to understand that when you're guided by your moral compass more than external influences, it's very likely your decisions will be better and more helpful to those involved.
1. Does this decision feel good and make me happy?
2. How do I benefit from this decision?
3. Does this decision reflect the mindset of my colleagues?
4. Does this decision make sense for the long term?
5. Is this the same decision that someone I admire would make?
6. Do I feel good about my decision making process? In other words, did I take due time and use rational thought and positivity to arrive at a choice?
7. Are those involved in the decision enhanced by the result?
8. What do I feel best about in this decision?
9. Will I tell others about how I'm proud of this decision?
10. Do I feel in my heart that this will create the best result possible?
11. How will this decision help me understand who I am?
In closing, the more analysis you put into important decisions, the more likely you've done the right thing. Its also a great idea to let "the smoke clear" or wait until the next day after a good night's sleep to make important choices. Try these and let me know if they help!
