I used to think that being good with money was all about knowing the numbers. After all, I had an accounting degree and worked in finance—so I should have had it all together, right?
At age 26, I hit financial rock bottom. I was in a toxic relationship with "Jeff," who was terrible with money (and in and out of jobs… and even jail). I thought if I just loved him enough, he’d change.
I allowed Jeff to control me for seven years, both emotionally and financially.
By the time I finally realized I had to leave, I was deep in debt, my credit score was wrecked, and debt collectors were calling non-stop. The worst part? I felt completely ashamed. I “should” have known better.
I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Ina Coveney, host of the Superhumans Podcast. This is THE most vulnerable share of my story - ever. You might have heard about the financial chaos in that old relationship, but you didn't know about the substance abuse and escalating violence that finally woke me up and got me out of there.
I got real about what it took to rebuild—not just my finances but my confidence. The turning point? Swallowing my pride and asking for help. My dad didn’t bail me out, but he gave me something even more valuable: a safe place to regroup and a solid plan to move forward.
In this episode, I share:
- How I broke free from an emotionally & financially toxic relationship
- The mindset shift that helped me take control of my money (and my life)
- Why so many high-income earners still feel like “hot messes” with their finances—and what to do about it
- The key to balancing Provider and Pleasure Money—so you can enjoy your income and build real financial security
If you’ve ever felt stuck, ashamed, or overwhelmed by money, I want you to know that you’re not alone. And you don’t have to stay there.
