Many of us think that getting a job and staying employed in this economy is already an accomplishment and a reason to be thankful.
But what if you get a job offer even if you're not looking? You might think this is a miracle, but it's actually not.
The further you go in your career, the more professionals you will meet, and the more skills you learn to become valuable in your company. With that said, there will always be a possibility that new job opportunities will come right on your doorstep unexpectedly.
If you ever find yourself in this situation where you have to pick between your current job and another job opportunity, here are the things you should consider before you make a decision:
How long have you been in your present job?
No employee is actually expected to stay in the same job for more than five years. But still, job tenure is important. Depending on the number of years you have been in your current job as well as how frequently you have transferred in your field, it would be a smart choice to let go of a new opportunity if you still need to gain more experience in your present job.
How satisfied are you in your job?
You should also take time to reflect on how you feel about your job. It's particularly important that you remember how it felt like doing your job before you got the new offer. Are you really happy? Are you challenged enough? Or you actually can't wait to have some change in your career?
You should also think about how the new job is related to your career plans. Does the new job fit your plans? If you're just excited by the thought of doing something new, you should think about how it will be a few months later when the excitement already wears off.
What perks will you need to give up and what can you gain?
You should think about the benefits of the job offer you're receiving and compare them to what you're getting from your current job. You want perks that will make your job more interesting, and your life much easier. Don't forget to take into consideration the factors that can lead to your personal happiness as well.
Will it be stable?
The job market we have at the moment is far from being a stable one. Although getting a job offer is a good sign that a company is doing well, there is still no guarantee that it will be in the same position for the years to come. Especially if you are currently employed in a company that has been stable for a long time already, even your personal coach would advise that you stay.
