As I write this tip, there is a Compliance Angel hovering over my shoulder making sure that I tell you to follow all the appropriate guidelines with regard to client gifts. Now… on with some ideas.
Keep this in mind – a gift with your logo on it is not really a gift at all. It’s really promotion. And, of course, it depends a bit on the utility of the gift. For instance, any golfer would appreciate more ammunition for the course (golf balls for you non-players). But make sure they’re top-level golf balls, or they may never get used by good golfers. A quality golf umbrella will be okay if it has your logo on it. Anything very utilitarian is usually appreciated.
The best client gifts are those that are clearly chosen because you have paid attention to your clients’ interests. If your client is into fishing, buy him/her a book with beautiful photos on great fishing spot. If your client is into cooking or wine, buy him/her a book on the subject. When your gift is tailored to their special interest, you get way more bang for your buck.
If you buy a gift from a website, consider having it shipped to your office so that you can personally deliver it to your client or ship it to them with your return address on it. This little thing adds to the personal touch of the gift.
I highly recommend sending small gifts of “thanks” to clients who give you introductions. Since you are not waiting for the prospect to become a client, a small gift rewarding the giving of introductions is enough. In this case, a utilitarian gift with your logo on it would be just fine.
